Meet David: Wodonga’s Local Bricklayer

Metricon

When you build a home with Metricon in Regional Victoria, you’re also supporting the local community. Metricon makes a point of working with people from our local areas to ensure that you get the best talent who knows the area and knows their trade.

David Deery is one of these local tradesmen. He has been building his reputation as a prominent Wodonga bricklayer for over 20 years.

David started his career in Wodonga in 1999, establishing DJ & LG Constructions Pty Ltd, where he continues as its hands-on business manager. The company’s principal trade is bricklaying, but in 2008 they branched out to offer other services within the building trade, including temporary fencing, quick stage scaffolding and site preparation.

While other builders seem to be lessening their involvement with local trades, Metricon is ramping things up. David is a prime example of a regional tradesman who is highly trained and knows his area better than any tradesman that we could bring into site. We’re committed to building the best quality homes, so of course we use the best quality trades.

David still resides in Wodonga today, now with a family of his own. He has been with his partner Leisha for over 20 years, and they have four children together. They have a caravan, which they like to tour around the country when they can – but they love coming home to Wodonga.

“It would be a rare occasion within the community of Wodonga that you don’t run into someone you know, and everyone is usually on for a good chat. We love that it offers a bit of everything for families: the Murray River, Hume Weir and of course the snow fields not far away. It is a vibrant hub for construction and the building trade, with a constant flow of new development, so there never seems to a shortage of work especially where new homes are concerned.”

David has been working for Metricon Homes for over ten years and estimates that the number of Metricon homes he has constructed or worked on in the Albury Wodonga area number in their hundreds. He initially started with the company doing site cleans, then moved into bricklaying, and now has a lot of input to most builds through the various services that his business offers.

“I have been involved with lots of different roles over the past ten years, and through this, I’ve developed a strong understanding of the high standards set by Metricon when they are building a new home for clients.”

As you might expect given his long career, David enjoys his work – but he says it is not as simple a job as many often think.

“There is more to bricklaying than just putting on brick on top of another: it involves studying plans and specifications, and maintaining dimension and alignment, as the brickwork is a major component to the finish of a new home. I have always worked with the mentality that if you provide a secure structure for the home, it will always result in a positive outcome for all involved in the construction process.”
