Meet Gary: Bendigo's Local Bricklayer

When Metricon Homes build in regional areas, we use regional trades. Local trades know the area and conditions better than anyone. Supporting the local community is important to Metricon, which is why we continue to strengthen our relationship with regional trades.

Gary Brereton is an example of a local tradesman who knows his stuff. For over 20 years, Gary has been building his reputation as a prominent Bendigo bricklayer from the ground up.

Gary grew up in Echuca and fell into bricklaying. “I always liked the outdoors and working with my hands – but, my dad said that if I could get an apprenticeship at the end of Year 10 then I could leave school, and I was lucky enough to get one… so I did!” he jokes.

However, after a 35-year career, the decision to become a bricklayer has taken up and down the east coast of Australia. Gary was working as a sole trader for 18 years, offering his services far and wide. In 2014 he moved into partnership with his wife and formed G & S Bricklaying, which has been running successfully ever since.

Gary and his wife Sally are Epsom locals, and for 16 years have loved living in their home that Gary helped to build. They have two older boys, aged 20 and 22, a daughter aged 15 and a wolfhound puppy called Bruce. Bruce sometimes rides in the car with Gary to work and joins him on lunch breaks.

Gary and Sally have been together for 27 years, and enjoy the life they’ve built together in Epsom. They love the open space and greenery that only a regional environment can offer. Gary likes getting out in the outdoors when he can and enjoys fishing and hunting.

Soon after they made the move to Epsom, Gary started working for us at Metricon. He estimates that he has worked on over 200 of our home builds. He’s also laid the bricks for several of our display homes, including the Delta 29 in Strathfieldsaye and the Whittlesea 25 in Epsom.

Gary gets a great sense of fulfilment from being a part of constructing a home: something that someone may treasure and live in every day for the rest of their lives.

“There’s a real satisfaction in seeing the finished product that you’ve helped build. Bricklaying is more technical than a lot of people give it credit for, and so when people compliment the finished look of a home or build that you’ve worked on, that’s really rewarding.”
