How to achieve the modern look in your home

Metricon

For many of our customers, creating a contemporary interior is the ultimate goal when designing their dream new home. But how do you nail that streamlined look?

Recently, Metricon Interior Designer Nicole Boeyen and Product Development Design Manager May Pok, along with our trusted suppliers Amphis, Residentia, and Reece, hosted a series of inspiring, in-person workshop sessions at our Lumiere display home in Mount Waverley, Victoria. They shared valuable tips and insights on how to turn your modern living vision into reality, offering expert advice on creating spaces that are both functional and visually appealing.

Modern design principles

Contemporary home design is about more than just the look. “It represents a lifestyle that embraces functionality, aesthetics and innovation,” May says. “At its core, it’s about clean lines, simplicity and sophistication. Both stylish and practical, modern living is bold and unique. It is your statement.”

A modern living home leans into clean lines, keeping floorplans spacious and free-flowing for a serene style. “A sense of proportion is important,” May says. “We believe in creating homes that are not only beautiful but also functional and enduring.”

Minimalism is at the heart of achieving a modern look, focusing on fewer, high-quality pieces and avoiding unnecessary clutter. Invest in standout items such as statement armchairs and sofas in your living area, bedside tables and dressers in the bedroom, and a sleek desk in your study, giving each piece the space it deserves. Use rugs to unify the space, and incorporate natural materials and textured accents for a polished finish.

While minimalism is key, it’s important to avoid a cold, unwelcoming atmosphere. “For example, with the Lumiere’s expansive open spaces and cubic façade, we wanted to create warm and inviting environment,” Nicole says of her interior design approach. “You can soften the angles with layers of organic textures and patterns that complement one another.”

Light the way

The team at Amphis demonstrated how effortlessly you can achieve a contemporary look with signature lighting. “Pendant lights are perfect for making bold statements, whether they’re hanging over an entrance void, above bedside tables, or alongside a tall mirror,” they shared.

To achieve an authentic modern look, it's crucial to balance a minimalist palette with impactful lighting choices. “In a home like the Lumiere, you can opt for either a large, singular pendant or a cluster of smaller ones to create a striking design element that stands out both inside and from the street,” they advised. It’s also important to be selective about which furniture pieces are highlighted. “While it’s tempting to make every piece a focal point, this can lead to the space feeling cluttered. Instead, consider a beautiful statement light above a kitchen island or dining table to create a clean, sophisticated look.”

Contemporary cooking

When it comes to creating modern kitchens, Residentia had some fantastic insights to share. While monochrome kitchens have been popular, there's definitely room to introduce a splash of colour without compromising the sleek, clean look.

“Earthy tones like ochre, mustard, rust, muted greens, browns, and greys are trending and pair beautifully with natural finishes like wood and stone,” they noted. However, some classics remain timeless. “Black continues to be a favourite choice, with many opting for black glass and steel appliances as striking statement pieces in their kitchens.”

Minimalism often means keeping appliances out of sight. “Integrated fridges and dishwashers remain popular, allowing the latest cabinetry trends to take centre stage,” they added.

Take the plunge

Our friends at Reece shared some fantastic tips for creating a modern bathroom that’s both stylish and functional. The key is to keep things simple and streamlined. “Focus on maintaining thin lines throughout, from the edges of basins to the bath and even the toilet seat,” they advised.

Make the most of your space, even in smaller bathrooms. “Consider a floating vanity to create a more open feel and choose materials like wood and stone to add warmth and authenticity,” they suggested.

A modern bathroom should be a relaxing retreat, so ensure it’s a place where you can unwind comfortably. If there’s a subtle tech upgrade that enhances convenience without being flashy, it’s worth considering. You can read about smart tech solutions here.

Incorporate bold accents where it counts. “While simplicity is key, don’t be afraid to add unique light fixtures, eye-catching tapware, or vibrant artwork to bring personality and visual interest to your bathroom,” they noted.
