Choosing the right heating and cooling system

Metricon

Winter is upon us, so if you’re in the southern states, that means saying goodbye to switching on the cooling, and hello to turning up the dial on some sweet, sweet heating. Meanwhile, up in Queensland, you're probably still embracing the ways of the trusty breeze machine to stay comfortable.

But it’s as good a time as any to look at the wide range of heating and cooling on offer at Studio M when finalising your floorplan*, with this easy guide that walks you through your options when figuring out what works best for you and your home.

Gas ducted heating

One of the most affordable and efficient ways to get all cosy in the cold is to pump low-emission heated gas via strategically placed ducts punctuating your home’s ceilings. Metricon offers a range of ducted gas options that work fast at banishing the shivers. You can choose zoning to be even more energy-conscious, using only what you need, where and when you need it. This makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious customers.

Hydronic heating

Alternatively, you can explore futuristic technology akin to Avatar 2 by harnessing the power of water with hydronic systems. These systems pipe heated water from a boiler or heat pump into wall-mounted radiators and towel rails. For a more integrated approach, underfloor circuits can be embedded within stone slabs, polished concrete surfaces, or tiled flooring, offering radiant warmth that keeps toes cosy.

The underfloor options are discreet in design but come at a higher cost. Similar to ducted heating, hydronic systems can be zoned to optimise efficiency. They are particularly beneficial for asthma and allergy sufferers since they maintain consistent moisture levels in the air, minimising drafts, hot spots, and odours. Water, known for its superior heat conductivity compared to air, ensures reliable and quiet operation.

Fireplaces

There’s something timeless about opting for a traditional fireplace, where you can lose yourself in the flickering flames on a chilly evening without the hassle of chopping and carrying logs. Metricon offers a range of options: from gas-piped fires with real flames dancing over artificial logs to electric versions featuring LED lighting. Whether you prefer an inset wall feature or a freestanding design, and whether your style leans towards a classic mantle and hearth or a sleek, modern look, the choice is yours.

Fireplaces provide localised heat, perfect for warming your favorite armchair where you can snuggle up with a good book.

Reverse cycle heating/cooling systems

Okay Queenslanders, you can tap back in as we look at home selections that keep you cool and toasty. Providing the best of both worlds, these systems offer dual functionality by both cooling and heating your home efficiently. They extract hot air during scorching days and expel it, while also refrigerating the air input. When it's cold, they maximise energy to efficiently heat your home, regardless of outside temperatures. This versatile system not only helps cut utility costs but operates seamlessly throughout the year.

You have the flexibility to choose which rooms to install units and whether they're wall-mounted or discreetly concealed in the ceiling. Some even offer smart control options via your smartphone or tablet.

Evaporative cooling

These roof-mounted units function like a sea breeze, where air evaporates over the waves, absorbing heat and refreshing the air. By drawing in fresh air from outside and using water to filter it, evaporative cooling can be a healthier option for those with respiratory issues or allergies. High-end units continuously refresh the water, enhancing the overall freshness they provide.

Split System Air Conditioners

A split system air conditioner consists of an outdoor unit that draws in outside air, cools it, and then pumps it into your home. The indoor unit absorbs heat from inside, and the two are connected via piping concealed inside the wall. It's best to install this system during the build stage, as post-construction installation can be more challenging. Split systems are simple, cost-effective, easy to maintain, and highly efficient, making them a popular choice for many Australians.

Airsmart indoor environment system

The Airsmart system goes beyond traditional heating and cooling by also purifying the air circulating in your home. With a smaller-than-usual ducted system, it offers an aesthetically pleasing and health-conscious solution. This system provides a quiet, draft-free environment and maintains a steady temperature, even in large rooms with high ceilings, making it an excellent choice for many Metricon homes.

Other options to consider

Once you’ve identified the right system for your dream home (don’t worry if you’re unsure, Metricon’s experts are here to guide you through the process) you might want to consider add-on air conditioning systems. This option involves integrating refrigeration with a gas-ducted heating system using a condensing unit that runs on electricity. While it will require some adjustments to your structural build, it provides an additional, efficient alternative to your overall home comfort solution.
