Not only do they look great, but their reflective nature will make any room look more spacious, add depth, and brighten the area by dispersing light.
With plenty of mirrors on the market – how do you know which one is right for you? If you’re spoilt for choice, asking yourself the following questions may help you to find the perfect one.
What’s the purpose of the mirror?
Mirrors are like the multitool in an interior designer’s kit. They can be used in a multitude of ways, depending on what your goal is for the space…
If you want to make a room seem bigger, a large floor to ceiling mirror is a great option.
Alternatively, large mirrors can be propped up against a wall or set behind a dining room table to reflect the room and give the illusion of more space.
If you want more light in your space, place mirrors opposite a window or a source of natural light.
This will cast more light around the room and make it seem brighter. Placing a mirror opposite lush greenery will also add colour and depth, breathing life into the space.

The frame is the most crucial aspect here – try something metallic and ornate to really make an impact, or shop around for an antique mirror that makes a statement. Alternatively, you can play around with the shape of the mirror – it doesn’t just have to be circular or square!

If a beautiful piece of artwork is tucked around a corner, use a mirror to make it more accessible from other angles in the home.

It’s important to consider the theme of your home before choosing a mirror. While mirrors are somewhat of a décor chameleon, you want to avoid choosing a style that clashes heavily with your look. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your mirror harmonises with your interior:
Hamptons
If your interior radiates Long Island luxe, then opt for a round mirror framed in black, white or brass.
Coastal
Square and rectangular mirrors using white-washed or distressed timbers work well in coastal homes, or alternatively you can choose a circular paned mirror that symbolises a porthole.
Luxe Hotel
Embrace the dramatic and find mirrors with jewelled, bevelled or arched frames. Brassy and metallic tones are ideal. Or, if you want to go all out, find a mirrored chandelier and really impress your guests.
Scandinavian
Clean and simple is key. The shape isn’t crucial to this look, so you can play around with different options including teardrop, pebble and oval – however, what you need to focus on is the frame. A small mirror with delicate framing will help to keep your space looking neat and tidy.
Where should you put your mirror?
Hallways
Make the hallways in your home appear wider by adding a mirror. This is an excellent opportunity to add a statement piece or play around with the angles of your home by reflecting light into the living room. Add a mirror to your console table, or choose a full-length mirror to accentuate your ceiling height. Just keep in mind that a mirror should be placed perpendicular to your front door to maintain good Feng Shui.
Kitchens
When you’re building a new home, consider installing a mirrored splashback. Mirrored and reflective glass splashbacks can help to add depth to your kitchen, and they come in a variety of colours, including muted whites and smoke blacks. Plus, you’ll be able to have a conversation with someone sitting at the bench while you cook up a feast on the stovetop.
Bedrooms
A stunning arched floor mirror or full-length mirror will add plenty of character to your bedroom space. Other options include installing mirrored closet doors, hanging a long mirror above your headboard or mounting a wall mirror in your walk-in-robe.
Empty Walls
If you have a blank wall that needs a little love, try adding a
feature mirror. This is where you can have a bit of fun and look for
something quirky or unique. Choose something with an ornate frame, or an
unusual shape to make an impact. Alternatively, you can create a
gallery wall with mirrors – this looks great when mirrors are hung in
groups of three.
