Robust construction sector activity continues despite COVID-19

Media statement

Metricon Homes CEO Mario Biasin has today expressed gratitude for the strength and volume of new home builds in Metricon’s build regions, even with lockdowns in place in VIC, NSW and SA.

As Australia’s largest residential volume home builder, Metricon Homes currently has more than 8,000 homes in its national pipeline.

“Although we are seeing news in the media about materials shortages and construction pauses, it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that 8,000 new homes will be delivered to Australian customers by Metriconover the coming months.

“The Federal Government’s HomeBuilder scheme, lower interest rates, and increased consumer desire to live in new homes, many away from high-density areas, have facilitated a huge surge in demand for new detached homes. Even though this demand is unprecedented, Metricon continues to accept and support new customer builds whilst completing all work currently on its books.

“The key challenge for the industry is in having a sufficient supply of materials, labour and land to satisfy this demand. We are confident that our strong quality trade and partner network will ensure minimal delays on Metricon home completions despite these shortages and recent COVID-19 lockdowns.

“We activated our Business Continuity Plan more than 18 months ago to ensure disruptions are minimised in this buoyant and dynamic market.

“As an industry it is certainly challenging. Whenever there is a big surge, there are some cost increases. We’ve anticipated these, and to give our customers confidence, we commit to fixed-price contracts. There is no cost escalation for them once they have signed their contract and committed to build. The risk is with us, not the customer.

“We have learnt so much along the way about managing COVID-19 lockdowns and have extensive safety procedures in place to keep working safely and efficiently.

“Having been in business since 1976, we remain fully committed to doing what we do best –building homes that people love to live in”, Mario concluded.
