Tis the season: A guide to choosing the perfect Christmas tree

Metricon

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to think about decking the halls with boughs of holly. Or more likely setting up a Christmas tree in your spacious Metricon open-plan living area. If you haven’t chosen your tree yet, don’t panic — there’s still plenty of time. But which type of tree to choose? The quick answer: it all depends on the look of your home.

Green Spruce

Opt for a plump green pine tree in a nod to European tradition. You can’t go wrong with this timeless classic. Decorations of all colours look fabulous against its green backdrop – the choices are endless. There are plenty of pine trees readily available including the real-deal (sold by many community groups on the side of the road these days) or a low-maintenance artificial substitute depending on how often you (or Santa’s helper) want to vacuum and whether the delicious smell of fresh pine is synonymous with Christmas.

The Midas Touch

If you’re into a crisper, contemporary aesthetic you could consider ditching the foliage altogether and going for the gleaming sheen of a metallic Christmas tree, or a wintry white spiral. Think the stripped-back minimalism of a New York loft or art gallery. And if you’re opting for design-led, structural style, why not ditch the baubles and keep it as clean as possible? Minimalist trees are also ideal for homes with excitable pets.

Wooden Wonder

As an alternative to leafy tradition or modern metallic, why not maximise the woody goodness at the heart of every Christmas tree? We love the Scandi-style quirky glamour of these branch inspired variations with their Jenga-like framework. Contemporary without sacrificing the warmth of nature, pair your timber tree with pastel and plain white baubles and surround it with brown paper-wrapped presents.

Anything goes

The best thing about Christmas trees is that there are no hard and fast rules. You might choose a small potted tree that can be revamped year on year or decide that an artificial one saves time and effort giving you better bang for your buck. In smaller homes, why not opt for a smaller ornamental tree or even simple branches strewn over your mantlepiece or a hallway table? Or go more geometric with a tree made from cross-section cuts, showing the age rings in all their glory.
There’s no end of possibilities and plenty of online inspo to help you find a look you’ll love.
