There’s a very important reason why it’s well worth turning your bathroom into an oasis, according to Metricon interior design whizz Felicity Tragardh. “It’s where you start and end the day, so it’s important that it’s not only functional, but is also beautiful and sets your mood for the day ahead,” she says.
Here are Felicity’s top tips for achieving a blissful bathroom.
Brighten your day
One of the easiest ways to achieve a beautiful bathroom that will centre you and set you up for a successful, fulfilling day is to invest in soothing lighting, according to Felicity. “It’s all about flattering and relaxing lighting in the bathroom,” she says.
“Soft wall lighting is lovely, especially if you have a bath and want to soak away your cares. Nobody wants to be floodlit by overhead lights.” Felicity Tragardh
Felicity proposes extending the concept to your vanity as well. "There's a current trend for curves in interior design, and I love a mirror with rounded edges and LED backlighting. This type of mirror is highly practical for tasks like shaving or applying makeup. To enhance its appeal, consider incorporating wall lighting on either side of the mirror, turning it into a focal point."
If your vanity provides ample storage, Felicity suggests opting for a mirror without additional storage. "If your vanity already has sufficient storage space, forgoing extra storage behind the mirror is worthwhile. Losing half of your mirror space to retrieve items can be inconvenient."
A touch of colour
Felicity says that your blissed-out bathroom can reflect your personality. “Particularly if it’s an ensuite that only you and your partner would use, you can infuse a bit of fun into it,” she says. “You can brighten up the space with a beautiful feature tile in the shower, taking advantage of our huge range of tile styles and colours to create your own little sanctuary.”
In compact areas, simplicity is key. "In smaller spaces, the tendency is to opt for lighter tones to create a bright and airy feel," advises Felicity. "For a relatively small ensuite, it's advisable to stick to a single floor tile and a matching wall tile, or even use the same tile for a cohesive marble hotel look. Avoid excessive mixing of surfaces and finishes, as it can result in a space that feels too busy."
Felicity recommends considering the colour of the grout even if you don't choose brighter tiles. "Even with a large-scale white wall tile, it's advisable to steer clear of white grout, especially in the shower area. Opt for a misty grey grout that won't accentuate any discolouration."
In the shower space, Felicity suggests incorporating a small step, even if you don't opt for a full sit-down experience. "For those who shave their legs, having a little platform to place your foot on is beneficial, providing stability instead of trying to balance on one leg."
For those who prefer a more straightforward approach, especially in larger bathrooms catering to the entire family and guests, Felicity offers a tip for adding a personal touch. "If you're hesitant about bold tiles in your bathroom, this is where you can introduce coloured towels and robes as subtle accents."
Plants can significantly enhance any bathroom design by infusing a touch of vitality. Felicity recommends, "There are a number of low-maintenance options that thrive in the humidity of a bathroom, creating a favourable environment for indoor plants. They not only introduce a burst of colour but also contribute to air filtration, promoting easier breathing. This addition can enhance the overall sense of bliss, whether you're gearing up for the day or winding down for a peaceful snooze."
Blissful details
To introduce subtle hints of colour to an otherwise muted bathroom palette and enhance the serene ambience of a relaxing bath, consider incorporating soap dispensers, candles, and other bathroom accessories. A bath caddy, strategically placed, adds both style and functionality. Felicity notes, "Bath caddies not only look great in terms of style but are also incredibly convenient. You can place your phone, a glass of wine, and your scented candle on it for the ultimate soak experience."
Adding a timber finish can bring a softening effect to the bathroom space, and the same applies to incorporating timber shelving. Felicity suggests, "Since bathrooms typically consist of hard surfaces, introducing warmth through timber, along with greenery and plants, can add a comforting touch to the space."
Felicity emphasises the importance of considering window finishes. "Opting for practical shutters or sheer curtains behind a freestanding bath in front of a large window can evoke a luxurious hotel vibe."
With these considerations in mind, you'll be feeling refreshed in no time.
