Five clever kitchen storage solutions you never knew you needed

Metricon

Forget cluttered cupboards and overstuffed pantries in the kitchen. This year it’s all about concealed and clever storage innovations in the heart of the home, including pop-up power points, folding doors and pull-out pantry drawers.

“Excessive storage – is there even such a thing?” says Besa Wooding, senior design and specification consultant at Hafele Australia. “Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry is here, and design experts believe it’s here for the long haul. Think storage walls in lieu of wraparound benchtops and overhead cabinets.”

Whether you're looking for a small-space storage solutions or the latest storage trends, there are a range of innovations that can help you make the most of your kitchen design and cupboard space. Yep, that means no more awkward, above-the-stove spice storage. There's a pull-out rack for that.

So, before you hang your tea towel through the oven handle, read on as Besa highlights Hafele’s top kitchen storage lust-haves.

Pull-out compartments

An effective - and enjoyable - cooking space should have easy access to both equipment and pantry staples. Besa suggests installing themed pull-out compartments to create a harmonious cooking experience. There’s a range of savvy selections, including a pull-out spice rack with spaces for oils and sauces, a dedicated drawer for coffee and tea and a slide-out under-sink storage basket (complete with a rail where you’ll be able to hang that tea towel).

Folding doors

Kitchen offices are becoming increasingly popular as more people work remotely and longer hours. Multitaskers, rejoice. You can still make deadlines after hours, and with the Concepta Bi-Folding Doors your office will be cleverly concealed once you’ve (finally) knocked off for the night. The design follows in the footsteps of a European laundry, with the doors hinging open and sliding out of the way so you can get to work.

Pantry drawer

Banish the countertop bread box and stow your semi-perishables in their own dedicated drawer. The Hailo Pantry Box looks like a standard drawer, but inside has a wooden grid for your bakery goods and a plastic grid for your potatoes and onions. You’ll have more room in your pantry, and easier access to afternoon snack time.

Pop-up power points

Need to power your iPad while following a recipe, or plug in the mixer while using the island bench The Point Pod seamlessly blends into your benchtop, eliminating excessive cords and giving you power right where you need it.

“The pod is hidden in the bench and rises up with one press,” Besa says. “You can access up to three power sockets and two USB ports without taking up bench or wall space.”

Once you’re done, simply press again and the pod lowers itself out of sight.

Easy access tray

They may be out of reach, but your overhead cupboards can still be successful storage options. You’ll be able to access everything up high with the iMove Lift-Up Tray. Using a simple pull down/push up system, the tray is lowered to your height and the items are instantly within reach and ready to be added to your dish. No step ladder needed.
