Designer family living: The Sentosa, with a customised twist

Metricon

Manoj and Kshitija Khera saw their dream home come to fruition as they completed their KnockDown ReBuild project with Metricon.

“We weren't interested in working with a volume builder, until we met Michael from Metricon at a display home in Glen Waverley,” said Kshitija. “We had every intention of working with a custom builder because our block was an unusual shape and what we wanted was so specific. However, Michael was so good at interpreting our vision that he encouraged us to consider a customised version of the Metricon design, the Sentosa”

At the time, Metricon didn’t have a Sentosa display home in Victoria, so, leaving nothing to chance, the Melbourne couple jumped on a plane to visit the Sentosa display home in north Adelaide to see for themselves if this design would indeed fit the bill for their KnockDown ReBuild project in Mount Waverley.

It was love at first sight when they saw the Sentosa. The Plantation facade and the Scandinavian interior felt like a holiday retreat, and they wanted to capture this feeling in their own home. The impressive exterior had enormous street appeal and the stunning interior was expertly laid out and large enough for their growing family. Importantly, it would work well on their urban block.

“We had heard of Metricon, but had never built a home before, and so didn’t know what to expect from a project home builder. We certainly didn’t know they could build as impressive a home as the Sentosa. Metricon’s expertise and willingness to work with us gave us huge confidence that we could achieve our building dreams.”

With their daughters growing up and needing access to public transport for schooling, Manoj and Kshitija wanted a new, comfortable home that would see them through their teenage years and beyond. They wanted separate living zones but also a central hub where their family could eat together and share their day, and they wanted to incorporate the airy, spacious feeling created by seamless indoor-outdoor living and high ceilings.

Planning is key

Manoj and Kshitija spent a lot of time in the planning phase due to the amount of customisation they required and the less than standard shape of their land.

They doubled the height of the ceiling in the outdoor room, increased the size of the already large teenage retreat and bedrooms upstairs, enlarged the size of the windows beyond standard, and included stone bench seating in the living spaces. All of these alterations were carefully incorporated into the original design and have greatly enhanced the uniqueness and desirability of the home. “Our consultant went out of his way to make everything possible. We can’t thank him enough!”

For the interior colour scheme, Kshitija said: “The Metricon designers have such expertise and go to so much effort to create beautiful interiors in their display homes, that there was no point trying to change it. We loved the way the Scandinavian look was put together so didn’t really want to alter much at all.”

Favourite parts of the home

“For us, the soaring ceiling height and the openness of the home are absolutely beautiful. A view is captured out of every window and it makes it both an interesting and calming space to be in. The seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors in the main living area is exactly what we envisaged, and we definitely wanted to take advantage of the hilltop position and city views by having sizeable decks and balconies,” says Kshitija. “We also love the inclusion of the built-in stone bench seats throughout the living space and in the bedrooms. It adds a functional but luxurious touch.”

Having two master suites and three living areas was an absolute winner for this family; with teenage girls, space and privacy were on the must-have list. The Sentosa floorplan offered them everything they wanted in terms of space for family interaction, and space to relax and retreat.
