The rise of terrazzo

Metricon

Hello, terrazzo!

Terrazzo is back - in a big way. And we are welcoming the return of the retro design feature with open arms. While marble took the reigns as interior design’s darling over the past few years, terrazzo is making its long awaited comeback as one of 2019’s hottest design trends.

From flooring to splash backs, benchtops to feature walls, terrazzo is fast becoming an interior favourite. It’s not only reality renovation shows like the Block and House Rules that are fueling our love for terrazzo, but also social media personalities, interior designers and retail businesses who are finding ways to incorporate the luxe look into their interiors.

The Pinterest 100 top trends to try in 2018 showed that searches and saves of terrazzo content were up more than 316% - and the figures don’t lie, terrazzo is back and here for the long haul.

So, what is Terrazzo?

Terrazzo has been around for centuries. Conceived in Italy, it traditionally consists of scrapped rocks, marble, quartz and glass set into a binding material such as cement. Once cured, the cement is then ground and polished into a smooth surface to reveal chips of colour and sparkle.

We still use traditional terrazzo production methods which haven’t changed hugely over the years, but you can now also get the look of terrazzo through polished concrete and digitally printed tiles which can be great alternatives. Beaumont Tiles has created the Promenado – a glazed porcelain tile that mimics the look of terrazzo complete with crazing lines, and it looks just like the real deal.

Terrazzo: How to

You might want to consider incorporating the elegant look of terrazzo in your new home. And with a history that spans hundreds of years, you’ll know it’s a timeless classic. Not only does terrazzo pack an aesthetic punch, but it’s exceptionally versatile, durable and low maintenance, so it’s a great option for flooring and high traffic areas.

Creating a terrazzo interior with warm grey tones supported by natural wood elements is a match made in interior design heaven. Using a terrazzo benchtop can add depth to a space and tie together your colour palette, by linking elements in the space to the tones found in the terrazzo. Tell a story using your space through colour, texture and materials that resonate with you.

A terrazzo tile large or small will be a striking visual feature, and with tiles available in all shapes, sizes and colours - you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you are planning to build a new home with Metricon, our Studio M team can help you to incorporate a touch a terrazzo in your new home.
