When it comes to building a home in regional areas, there’s no better option than local trades. No matter what the trade, it’s reassuring to know that your tradespeople not only know their craft but also know the area. Metricon knows how skilled regional tradies are. Why would we send in trades from the city when local do it so well?

Steve Roberts owns and operates Axedale Excavations and Haulage, which started from small beginnings in 2003 and has grown from there. He is Axedale born and bred, and still lives there with his family: his wife and three young children.

They love what regional living has to offer. “We spend a lot of time outdoors, whether that be fishing at the river, dirt biking or four-wheel driving. We love the local Bendigo community because everything we need is right here or not far away.”

Most of the work that Steve has done over the years has been in and around Bendigo. Growing up, he always enjoyed working outdoors and loved machines, so becoming a tradie seemed a perfect fit. “Not to mention, it got me out of doing Year 12!” he jokes. However, Steve loves his job and thinks that people can sometimes misunderstand the work that tradies do.

“It’s not all beer and skittles. We are passionate about what we do and are proud of the quality work we deliver. People may not understand the time or effort it takes to ensure the job is done right.”

Steve has been working with Metricon Homes for the past five years, doing various jobs such as site cuts, excavation and earthworks, and haulage work. Being a part of creating the foundation of someone’s home is no easy task – but, even after 16 years, Steve still finds his job a rewarding one.

“What I most enjoy about my work with Metricon is that every day is different; with each new site comes a new challenge.”
