The vision for Metricon’s latest Signature home design, the Riviera, was simple. It had to have wow factor. And, since launching in September, this flagship five-bedroom, five-bathroom abode has set a new benchmark for contemporary coastal cool. The sprawling, east coast masterpiece is the personification of luxury, resort-style living, anchored by an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining and entertaining area that seamlessly flows from the inside out to deliver the ultimate lifestyle home.

With clean lines, a moody palette and luxurious stone and timber finishes, the Riviera offers a more modern, edgy and daring design than you would normally expect from a volume builder, without compromising on quality, functionality or, above all, liveability.

“I love this home,” design director Adrian Popple says. “It’s so welcoming and inviting. It’s the kind of home you feel like a you could just move in and live in.”

Adrian, who has been designing homes for a national market for more than 25 years, says it wasn’t until he moved from Melbourne to Queensland about three years ago that he really understood the climate, and the lifestyle the warmer weather affords.

“I really wanted to do a Queensland-inspired home,” he says of the Riviera, which embodies the easy, breezy, Sunshine State way of life. “So when we found this site in early 2016, the idea was to make it as open and airy as possible. The block was wide but not too deep, so we were able to turn the house on its side and create a home that has heaps of volume through the middle. We wanted to have the living functions running right across the back so they were really connected to the outdoor. It’s contemporary, without being too slick. It still had to have resort style to it.”

The magnificence of the Riviera’s design hits you the moment you walk through the front door. From the grand entrance, where a 5.8m void connecting the two upstairs wings creates both a sense of resplendence and drama, the layout unravels to reveal an entertainer’s paradise, beyond which a verdant, palm-tree lined horizon frames a wall of ceiling-to-floor bi-fold doors. Oversize, concrete tiles and Calcutta stone splashbacks are juxtaposed with warm oak accents and walnut timber panelling, while inky cabinetry and monochrome artworks are offset by wall niches adorned with lush indoor greenery.

While the open timber staircase is a standout feature, and a spine wall mounted with concrete-look tiles also adds another level of detail and interest, Adrian says it’s the functionality and flow that really set the Riviera apart.

“One of the great things about this home is that it’s modern but it doesn’t feel austere,” Adrian says. “That comes down to balance. Initially, I was a little concerned about the size of the dining room because it is quite large, but the transition of the entry that steps down into the dining area helps to define the spice. We wanted to put all the wow factor into the ground floor, into the areas you entertain in. This is where people spend most of their time so the space really accentuates and celebrates the social heart of the home.”

From the bigger picture to the finer features, every detail has been considered to ensure this home isn’t only aspirational, but practical, too. That’s why little things like louvre windows to promote cross ventilation, highlight glass to allow maximum light and even the cladding used on the home’s exterior have been selected because they serve a functional purpose.

“With the Riviera, we knew we needed to create something special,” Adrian says. “We are trying to forge a new market up here and really show our capabilities as a builder so we needed to take a step away from our core Designer product range and give ourselves that point of difference. What we’re good at is making everything work and not leaving anything to chance. We’ve had architects and builders come though and they see us now as a serious competitor and threat because we can design to that level and also back it up with our build quality and attention to detail.”

That the compliments and commendations for the Riviera keep pouring in, Adrian says, shows that Metricon is continually trying to lift the bar, to push the design envelope. This he says, is the most rewarding part of the job.

“For me to sit down and get creative and design something completely different was really exciting,” he says. “Then to see it hit the ground and know that people are loving it, that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”
