When it comes to planning a home, one of the most overlooked spaces is the bathroom. For a room we all use on a daily basis, bathroom design is something that we should consider a little more thoughtfully, after all a truly beautiful bathroom is about finding the perfect blend between functionality and stylish aesthetics.
At last year’s ISH Bathroom Fair, our friends at Reece were able to identify some of the key trends that are now beginning to filter through in modern bathroom design. ISH takes place every two years in Frankfurt, Germany and is the place where the world’s top bathroom brands gather to present the latest in bathroom products.

Some of the global bathroom trends that were identified by the key influencers at Reece were:
Fine lines
Impossibly thin, yet incredibly strong design profiles are transforming the aesthetic and design of bathroom spaces.
Muted palettes
This trend is all about palettes of muted tones that set the mood. Think subdued greys and natural tones – bright, bold pops of colours are on the way out.
Metallic vision
Metallic tapware, showers and accessories were among the top trends
identified at ISH 2015. Adding metallic finishes to your bathroom helps
to add a sense of modern glamour whilst still feeling modern and edgy.
Smart toilets
Technology is finding its way into the bathrooms of your home, providing the ultimate in convenience, comfort and style. Say goodbye to the days where the toilet was a humble, hidden functional element and say hello to heated toilet seats!
Sensory bathing
Revolutionary shower designs that celebrate water and heighten our bathing experience are now making their way into modern bathroom design.
Raw Materiality
Bathroom design is beginning to experiment with the raw, textural qualities of stone, glass and timber. Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures, such as a neutral stone bench top and warm timber cabinetry, to create an inviting space.
Mobility in the bathroom
Bathroom brands continue to explore and find ways of coming up with innovative design solutions that address materiality, accessibility for all ages as well as disability access.
Three-piece tapware
Mixer taps have become the norm in bathrooms these past few decades, but this final trend is all about a return to three-piece tapware.

Thinking about these ten trends is a great starting point when creating your very own bathroom. Of course, remember to keep in mind how you envisage yourself and your family using the bathroom as this will influence the way you complete the look of your bathroom, as well as which fittings and finishes you will choose.
Other things to keep in mind when creating your perfect bathroom – invest in some underfloor heating for the tiles (the ultimate in luxury) while both dual showers and full length mirrors in the bathroom are becoming more popular.
