Did you know there was a colour of the year? Well there is, and Pantone, the global authority on colours, has declared this year’s colour Greenery. The Pantone Colour of the Year is a “symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude."^
This years’ colour is a gorgeous refreshing yellow-green that promises new beginnings and reinvigoration. Reminiscent of the early buds of spring, greenery offers urbanites a calming way to connect back with nature when used in architecture, design pieces and lifestyle choices. It provides a way to “satisfy our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, [and] symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.'*
Bringing the outside in
Whilst it’s desirable to live on a large property with plenty of nature’s goodness on our doorstep, for many of us it is simply not a reality. But there is a way to re-create the same sense of calm and vitality that nature offers us in an urban setting. Bringing the outdoors inside through the use of plants and botanical motifs is a great way to achieve this look and feel. Your home and health will thank you for it.
The Denver 37 home design by Metricon, on display in Mount Barker, South Australia, incorporates the botanical interior trend beautifully. There are large windows at all orientations to take advantage of natural light and to highlight the surrounding gardens. There is also a seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor rooms, creating an enhanced sense of space and energy throughout the home. Lovely natural fibres and organic shapes have been used, and there are plenty of planters and ‘moments’ throughout the home that highlight nature’s best.
Greenery: Both real and imagined
If you’re not a green thumb, don’t panic – you can still be on trend with the Botanical theme. Decorative elements such as botanical illustrations, cushions, linen, screening or wallpaper can really add drama and depth, especially when combined with real foliage. The other option is to go BIG with your plants. If you’re unsure whether you can keep multiple small plants alive, try going for one large piece of greenery that will add maximum impact to your room. Be sure to choose a stylish planter for it to sit in.
Greenery can inject life into a space when used correctly. Your aim should be to have the plants enhance the objects around them.
